Our Internationality

Internationality

General Chapter 2008

The Society offers us a valuable treasure in its international and intercultural life. For me, this has broadened my horizons and allowed me the opportunity to understand more deeply the perspective of our sisters from every continent. Their life, with all its richness and challenge has enriched me and challenged me to walk in their shoes and to share from my own experience so that we can all grow in appreciation of God’s work in each others’ lives and in the lives of our different countries and cultures.

The most significant way in which that has manifested itself for me was during my six months of international experience in Chile. Here, I experienced a stepping beyond all of my comfort zones into the hand of God, who guided me through loneliness, frustration, inadequacy and much pain to a deeper awareness of His love and companionship through every moment. My Chilean sisters, the teachers at our schools and the children, became for me the face of Christ who showed me compassion, understanding and friendship even though I was barely able to communicate in their language.

School in ChileFor them, this was not an obstacle to friendship and this will always remain one of the most profound graces of my international experience.  I leant on Jesus and found him to be a constant and loving companion who invited me to trust him ever more deeply. In recent months, the people of Chile have suffered a devastating earthquake which caused death and destruction on a vast scale. Having spent a brief time in the province my heart goes out to them as they struggle to re-build their lives and to walk more closely with Jesus through their own passion and resurrection.

“Our internationality is for us a gift and a responsibility. We desire to put it at the service of life, responding to the challenge coming from the birth pangs of humanity and the whole of creation.”
